- Public Enemy's next album, There's a Poison Goin' On, will be available for free on the rap group's official website "in maybe 40 or 50 days," Chuck D has said. Now, Chuck has said he is planning on creating an Internet label with a group of business partners whom he declined to name. "Matter of fact, I'm about to do three deals," he said. "Over the last four or five months it's been a situation of trying to figure out where and what."
He said he didn't want to give details on any of the deals until they were finalized, which he said could happen as early as next week. Chuck D spoke as he was leaving Tribeca Rooftop, a Manhattan conference hall where he had just taken part in Silicon Alley '99, an Internet industry conference. He discussed his dispute with Def Jam over the MP3 files at length during a round-table discussion on the music industry's future. The rapper, who wore a blue hooded sweatshirt, black jeans and Timberland boots, garnered frequent laughter and applause from the conference's button-down crowd with sharp comments on the Internet-era music industry."If I can stream or even download to millions of people, who needs radio?" asked Chuck D, who with Public Enemy recently launched an Internet radio site (www.bringthenoise.com). "In fact, I might be the first artist [who] sues a radio station for playing my s---."

the Expo attendees. "As we head into the 21st century, it'll be difficult to stop a cultural

through artistic communication and sharing interests in a common
bond--rap music and hip-hop have achieved that in 20 years. On the
wild, wild web... Watch, feel and listen. It's only just begun," Chuck
said in a written statement. For more info on the Expo check out http://nyrock.com/expo/.

- Diggin' In The Crates will be performing A Tribute To Big L at Tramps Nightclub on March 6th.
Diggin' In The Crates was already scheduled to perform on March 6th, before Big L was murdered. However, the group strongly believes "L would've wanted the show to go on." In an effort to raise money, the group is asking for sponsorship for this event. The money will cover rehearsal cost, and any additional money collected will go directly to the Coleman family, to help with various expenses. Any amount that people are able to contribute would be helpful.

- Big L(real name Lamont Coleman) of Diggin' In The Crates has been shot and killed as confirmed by Wendy Day of The Rap Coalition. He leaves us at 23 years of age. Years later, he released his first album, Lifestyles Of The Poor And Dangerous on Columbia/Sony Records which included the singles "Put It On" featuring DJ Kid Capri and "M.V.P.". Just last year he started his own record label, Flamboyant Records, distributed by Fat Beats and drop his first independent single "Ebonics" which was a head nodder for many heads worldwide. Snoop Dogg, Timbaland, Jermaine Dupri, Raekwon, Bone Thugs-N-harmony's Bizzy and Krayzie Bone have all rallied in support of the new Eddie Murphy-produced Fox-TV claymation sitcom 'The PJs.'
While director Spike Lee and Southern California's Project Islamic H.O.P.E. have come forward and spoken out against the new series -- which comedic-ly depicts contemporary life in the housing projects -- these rappers have decided to help promote the show by providing songs for an upcoming soundtrack, entitled 'Music from the PJs.'

Contrary to some published reports, rapper Nas is not expected to perform, the spokesperson said. Each attendee is expected to bring four cans of food for charity.
- Eclectic rock-folkie Beck has recorded songs with rapper Kool Keith and British techno-acoustic chanteuse Beth Orton for his upcoming album.

P is also in talk with MTV to executive produce and star in a half-hour series about a former boot camp officer who takes over a juvenile detention center and tries to save it from being shut down while rehabilitating its troubled youth. - Just one month after a judge threw out C. Delores Tucker's $10 million defamation suit against Tupac Shakur's estate, she has lost another. On Tuesday, a judge dismissed Tucker's suit against Time and Newsweek for misreporting the substance of her suit against Tupac's estate.
Tucker claimed that two "lewd and indecent" songs off his All Eyez on Me album ('Wonda Why They Call U Bytch' and 'How Do U Want It') caused her to "suffer a loss of advice, companionship and consortium." The magazines interpreted that "consortium" meant sex and Time wrote in their issue that Tupac's songs "caused her so much distress that she and her husband have not been able to have sex", while Newsweek said that Pac "iced her sex life". Tucker said that consortium didn't mean sex and that she was suing the publications for libel. Judge Ronald L. Buckwalter said that she would have to prove actual malice and that "there is a vast difference between being annoyed and/or embarrassed on the one hand, and being disgraced and ridiculed to the extent that one's reputation is harmed in the estimation of the community, on the other". Even though Tucker lost, she still has pending suits against other media outlets.
- The United States Postal Service is planning on putting out a series of stamps dedicated to the 80s. The categories include Arts & Entertainment, Science & Technology, Sports, People & Events, and Lifestyle. The one we care about is Arts & Entertainment where the Hip-Hop Culture Series is in competition with E.T.- The Extra Terrestrial, Country Music, The Bonfire Of The Vanities, The Cosby Show and Cats. - Yesturday (February 12th) Capone of CNN was released from Prison. Soon, he and Noreaga will work on CNN's next album entitled 'The Reuinion.'
- Saukrates has left his label Warner Brother Records due to his contract expiring and the label not wanting to renew it.
- There have been a whole load of Wu-related rare compilations floating around. It seems that these are 100% unofficial bootlegs though. Carlos Bless(C12) had this to say :
Hmmm... Interesting. listen things been very, very hectic on this side between the studio construction and my new kid. all and all everything is fine. this situation sounds like a bootleg project because is a strange combination of artist. I know for a fact that papa wu's
projects haven't been released yet because i spoke to him last week. Plus shabazz doesn't put out records with out at least my consent because that's the respect we have for each other. so this inquiry your making is very hard for me to swallow. I'll look into it this week and keep you posted. in the meantime don't support it and try to find out who's behind red hook records so i could put a stop to it. I will notify the wu-tang headquarters.
-
Here's a quote from him on the terrorist charges: "A terrorist is
someone that bombs somebody's house, or hijacks planes and holds people
hostage or bombs big buildings like the United Nations. Me, I'm just a
regular rap artist who loves women, who loves partying, who loves to
fuck, who loves people not to lie about him. That's basically it. I'm
not no terrorist or nothing like that."
- ODB talked to MTV about how ridiculous the gun-running accusations
are. He said "Wu-Tang don't have to be involved with no guns. We don't
have to deal with guns, because we're rap entertainers. I mean, how much
guns can you get after you're a rap singer? If you're a rap singer and
you come from the ghetto, you're probably going to do something
constructive with your life, if you're a wise man. [You're] not doing
shit that will jeopardize your shit. We ain't here to be jeopardizing
what we built."
- Sonicnet has an article on Ghostface's weapons charge that's in
the courts right now. It looks a little shady from all the contrasting
stories on the cop's side, and Ghost's lawyer said he's gonna definatly
bring the police's conduct into question. The article also said that
Ghost should be out in 3 months, and that his album is now slated for a
July release.
- The Nas 'I Am' promo wasn't meant to be a promo. Basically some distributors sent it out as just a promo but it was just a compilation of Nas tracks. Columbia and Nas himself have both stated that very few tracks from the forthcoming album were on that promo.
- Oh yeah, ODB is back in court (which is getting annoying) AGAIN for Threat charges. To make matters worse, the dirty bastard was late.
- In what may be one of the stranger rap n' role reversal cases to come down the legal pipeline in quite some time, a male teenager in Norfolk, Virginia, has been fined $500 and ordered to stop impersonating Missy "Misdemeanor" Elliott. A district court judge levied the fine against 19-year-old Dustin Wilkins last Thursday for pretending to be the noted female rapper and producer during phone interviews and conversations with radio stations and various others, including Wilkins' former employer, according to the Associated Press.
- Word has come that Master P will executive produce, co-direct, and star in the prison film, 'Lock Down.' Written by Preston A. Whitmore II, whose previous credits include 'Fled' and 'The Walking Dead,' the film depicts the lives of three wrongly imprisoned inmates whose friendship deteriorates behind bars.

You all know that we deserve some of those awards because we work hard and try to make the best site on the net. And to those that have already voted for us, thank you !
- ODB (again):
While reporters kept asking Dirt about the case, he said: "I was
innocent; go out and buy my new album, Nigga Please. It's the real
hip-hop. It's not how people think hip-hop is."
And I think I get why he changed the title of his album, cuz when
someone asked if ODB celebrated after he was found innocent, he replied:
"Nigga, please."
The article again says ODB's album is due out in June, and also says that
he just did two tracks with RZA that will either go on RZA's album or be
used on the third Wu-Tang album.
- DJ Stretch Armstrong will doing an internet radio show for MTV
starting in mid-February. His first guest will be Inspectah Deck, and
the broadcast will feature "exclusive interviews, freestyle footage, and
new tracks."
- Here's the info on ODB from MTV and Sonicnet:
First quotes:
ODB on cops: "I thought the cops were good back in the days....till the
motherfuckers started shooting guns."
ODB on his truck: "Now I got a hole in my truck this big." He then used
his hands to illustrate the cantalope-size hole the cops put in his
vehicle.
ODB's mom: "They could have killed...my nephew and him, so we have to
exonerate him. We have to sue."
ODB on the suit: "As much money as I can get, I'm gonna get it." "They
took shots at me, so now we're taking shots back."
ODB on other cops in New York: "I know a lot of officers in New York
City. They pull me over, see it's Ol' Dirty Bastard and say 'Oh, keep
going, get the fuck outta here.' That's how it is 'cuz I'm no bad guy."
ODB on his other cases: "I don't want to talk about it, but I mean, the
accusations on that is false also."
ODB addressing everyone: "Wu-Tang don't be fucking with nobody, so don't
be fucking with us. That goes for the FBI, CIA, all you motherfuckers."
ODB on the future: "I got an album to make. I won't have no more cops
running up on me. I'll be alright. We'll be alright. My family will
be alright."
ODB on his constant swearing: "Excuse my language, this is how I talk"
"I'll stop cursing. I'm just upset." "Sorry Mom."
And back to that album, Sonicnet is saying the title is now Nigga Please
and is scheduled for release in June. He hopes to still get Madonna,
Little Richard, Natalie Cole and Mariah Carey on his album. If any MC
could pull off a respectable hip-hop album with all those non-hip-hop
guest stars, it's Dirt.
- Today the Grand Jury in ODB's case ruled that should not face the
charges that he shot at police officers. So, basically, Dirt was so
innocent that they didn't even bring it to trial.
- Be sure to check out the current issue (2/8/99) of TIME Magazine. On the cover is Lauryn Hill and the coverline: "Hip-Hop Nation: After 20 years -- how it's changed America" It features a good comprehensive look at the birth and current status of the industry as well as features on Chuck D, Lauryn Hill and Puffy.

The Dust Brother's are known for their production for Hanson, Beck, The Rolling Stones and Marilyn Manson and will most likely assist S.O.B. with remixes and production on their upcoming projects.
- With gigs on this year's Levi's Sno-Core tour and Hard Knock Life tour, Redman is obviously fond of life on big package tours. However, he is but one man, so the rapper will drop off of Sno-Core in late February to hook up with Jay-Z, Method Man, DMX and the Hard Knock Life outing.
The Sno-Core folks won't exactly be over a barrel as Black Eyed Peas will step in to replace Redman on February 27 in Chicago. The rap group will join Everclear, Soul Coughing, and DJ Spooky on the tour.

- Twenty years after helping usher in the hip-hop revolution with the single "Rapper's Delight," the Sugar Hill Gang is preparing to release a brand-new album -- just for the kids. Entitled "Jump on It," the new children's album features the influential rap outfit alliterating its way through such elementary-school tunes as "The Vowels (A-E-I-O-U)," "Kick a Rhyme with Dr. Seuss" and an updated, juvenile version of "Rapper's Delight," which has been re-christened "It's Like a Dream Sometimes." Getting in on the kid's play is fellow hip-hop godfather Grandmaster Melle Mel, who guests on three of the songs on "Jump on It," and a portion of the album's proceeds will be donated to the Boys & Girls Club of America.
- In the wake of his recent Grammy nomination, Big Punisher has been busy shooting several new videos for his upcoming projects and guest appearances. Two weeks after joining Fat Joe and the rest of the Terror Squad to film the clip for Joe's new single, Pun returned to the camera this week -- this time with No Limit rapper Mr. Serv-On. The two went on location in New York City to film the video for "NY to NO," the first single from Serv-On's upcoming sophomore album, "Da Next Level." According to Pun, the song's title refers to the general unity between rappers as a whole, and more specifically, the bond between the Terror Squad and the No Limit crew.
- ODB's attorney describes Dirt as "elated" after the verdict.
He may persue civil action, meaning he might sue the cops for false
charges, false imprisionment, attempted murder of him, and more, but
right now Dirt's just happy to put it all behind him.
ODB will be having a press conference at 2:00 EST about the charges. I
expect Sonicnet will have tons of quotes from it, and MTV will have a
couple video clips in their little news updates.
And if you wanna know how unenlightened some of the police are, then
let's hear a quote Sonicnet took from a cop just after the verdict.
"I don't like rap music. I don't know anything about rap music and
don't get me started on what I think of this guy."
Now, ODB still has those charges in LA, and will face them next week,
but being set-up here might help him in his other cases.
Also, ODB's lawyer said that Dirt was in the studio every day since his
release from jail.
-
Raekwon and Prodigy (of Mobb Deep) will guest on a track on Nas' album,
Canibus will supposidly be on Deck's album, and Slick Rick will be on
Raekwon's album.
-
Oh, The Source also has an interview with Kurupt, where he mentions the
4 Horsemen project (you should know the roster by know). They're gonna
drop in 99 and it looks like it will be a collaberation of the 4 artists
labels too. Here's a quote: "We're dangerous too, boy. No dance music!
No samples, just raw attack.
-
And the No Exit video is out on MTV. Wu, Mobb Deep, Blondie and Coolio are just rockin' the scene on stage.
- My man NumbersPoetic wants you to know about his online radio show. It's on every Tuesday, 3-5pm (I think ET) over at http://www.udel.edu/wvud/
- Master P was cut today by the charlotte hornets so he wont live out
his NBA dream yet. Big Ups to Mecca for the info !
- As hip-hop continues to influence all corners of pop culture, now comes word that it has taken the cosmetics world. The small Brooklyn-based Miksu Cosmetics company has a complete line of music-inspired products-eyeshadow, lipstick, blush and nail polish-- with names like Busta Wine, Jiggy, Hype Platinum, and Badu Blue, which was personally chosen, by Miksu's favorite celebrity customer, Erykah Badu. The eyeshadows come in CD cases, and the blushes are shaped like turntables.(Peep www.miksu.com for more info....)
- Master P has just been added to the Charlotte Hornets training roster which moves him one step closer to joining the NBA. P will play under his given name Percy Miller and was in the intrasquad scrimmage last Saturday at the Charlotte Coliseum.
- On March 30, The Christopher Wallace Memorial Fund, founded by Biggie's mom Voletta Wallace, will be holding their inaugural benefit gala dinner in honor of Notorious B.I.G..
Faith Evans, Biggie's widow, is scheduled to perform while other artists will be announced later. The dinner will be taking place at Chelsea Piers in Manhattan, plates are tentatively going for $1,000, with a full-table going for $10,000. The Christopher Wallace Memorial Foundation helps to provide educational tools to schools and community centers in all five boroughs of New York City.
- Canada's version of the Grammy's, The Juno Awards, has announced their nominees. I guess I'll just mention the category we care about:
Best Rap Recording: The Epic- Citizen Kane (Treehouse) Frankenstein UV- Frankenstein (K.O.S./Page)
Ghetto Concept -The Album- Ghetto Concept (7 Bill Enter/Page)
Built To Last- Maestro (Attic/Universal)
'Northern Touch'- Rascalz featuring Choclair, Kardinal Offishall, Thrust & Checkmate (Figure IV/ViK/BMG)
Last year, the Rascalz were awarded for Best Rap Recording but chose not accept it in protest of the show not televising the awarding of the Rap, Reggae, and R&B categories.
