This is the part of the reviews section in which we investigate the quality of hip hop related alternatives. Remixes or collaborations between a hip hop producer/artist/DJ and an artist/group from another genre of music, usually rn'b. Superwoman (Remix) |
Artist: Lil' Mo ft. Fabulous |
|
Fabulous was never a brilliant emcee, but he doesn't a decent job here. He meshes nicely with the beat, and Lil Mo does her thing very nicely. She sings well with fairly decent lyrics. The beat works well after a few listens, at a loud volume. Worth checking.

Stutter (Double Take Remix) |
Artist: Joe ft. Mystikal |
|
When you get beats like this, with samples which are instantly recognizable and a nicely re-arranged vocal selection for Joe (whom we all know can sing), plus nice lyrics you have the setup for a brilliant track. But, Mystikal does spoil it slightly. He's way too ferocious and intense for the track's tone, altering it's quality. If Mystikal was out of the picture here, I'd enjoy the track more.

Missing You |
Artist: Case |
|
With rn'b joints I find that there's an easy way to make these tracks work. Excellent singing, a fitting beat, and decent lyrics. Even if the lyrics are saying something crude, if well sung and backed by the right beat, the track will sound wonderful. Well, luckily the lyrics here aren't crude nor bad, they're the usual rn'b love themed lyrics we're used to. But, they're performed well, and the beat which Case was supplied with also works wonders. Nice track.

Still (Soul Love Remix) |
Artist: Macy Gray |
|
I know a hell of a lot of people who loathe Macy Gray and her music. I'm not really one of them. I like her singing style and her lyrics are consistently nice. I'm not a fan of viewing her performances and things of that nature, because to be polite, she doesn't look like she's of "normal intelligence" when she performs. Regardless, Macy Gray sings well, and the remixed beat here, done by Kiilu Grand & The KPL Allstars works pretty well, components of the beat are pretty recognizable, a pleasant joint.

Miss California(Original)1/
Miss California(Spanglish Mix)2 /
Miss California(Spanish Version)3 |
Artist: Dante ft. Pras |
|
We all know Pras isn't the best emcee ever, but he fits in very well here. His deep voice slots in well with the singing, and the singing is really good. Dante is talented, that's evident, and the music created by Vada Nobles works well as a backdrop for Dante and Pras. As you can guess, the other version's are self explanatory. The Spanglish version has a mixture between English and Spanish lyrics. It's my least favourite...I like either one language or another, not two combined. The Spanish version is basically another Spanglish version, it's not plain Spanish which disappointed me. The beat is slightly altered to provided more of a Latin feel. Not a bad few tracks. The original is the best version.

Bangin' (Don't Lie) |
Artist: Nicole ft. Prodigy |
|
Though obviously very conceited (check his recent interview with XXL), Timbaland is obviously a very talented producer, he laced this joint with a nice beat. But unfortunately, Prodigy's role here isn't the best ever, the switched up beat doesn't work as effectively. Nicole's singing works very well over the Timbaland beat, Prodigy's part is okay, but unamazing.

The Rose That Grew From The Concrete |
Artist: Nikki Giovanni ft. Tupac Shakur |
|
This short track is a beautiful little adaptation of Tupac Shakur's words. The beat fits perfectly and Nikki Giovanni's singing/spoken word reciting brings 'Pac's words to life. Plus, the interlaced Pac samples work nicely. Dopeness.

No More (Trackmasters Remix) |
Artist: 3LW ft. Nas |
|
I'm not very familiar with the original version of this, but Nas' verse really works well. I thought that he fitted into the track excellently, 3LW's song is a pretty nice joint, the Trackmasters created a nice beat and overall, I like it.

Mamacita (1/2 Steppin' Remix)1 / Mamacita (Tropical R&B Remix)2 / Mamacita (Deep Latin Remix)3 |
Artist: Public Announcement |
|
As with many joints I feature on this page, I am not that familiar, if familiar at all with the original joint. I'm not at all familiar with the original of this. The '1/2 Steppin Mix' with Eddie James and Ike Lee III on production has a cool, somewhat curious beat and Public Announcement doing their thing with their rn'b vocals. 'The Tropical R&B Remix' is produced by Eddie "Love" Arroyo, and it's on a very different vibe. The hook has more enthusiasm put into it with an intense, 'tropical' vibe to it. I like the hook more, but the rest of the track was best performed on the first track. Finally, the 'Deep Latin Remix,' produced by Mike Dunn, is on, as the title would suggest, a sort of Latin vibe. Basically, the '1/2 Steppin' Mix' is the best, so don't waste your time with the others.

Did She Say (So So Def Remix) |
Artist: Jagged Edge, JD, Da Brat & Lil' Bow Wow |
|
Jermaine Dupri jacks another beat on this one. This time it's the melodic gem used for the Beatnuts' "Off the Books." The beat loses its flare a bit, as Jagged Edge are their same old selves. And of course, verses are traded between Da Brat, JD, and Lil Bow Wow. Sounds like any other So So Def rap/R&B blend.

I Can't Tell (Remix) |
Artist: Monifah ft. St. Lunatics |
|
You've got to hand it to Monifah. She keeps trying so hard to make a good "comeback." But with songs like this, she's going to keep making comebacks for a long time. Same goes for Teddy Riley. This song sounds like the Mya/Blackstreet/Mase/Blinky Blink joint from the first Rugrats movie. Corny beat. Corny lyrics.

I Wish (Remix) |
Artist: R. Kelly ft. Boo & Gotti |
|
Just when you thought the regular version was thugged out enough, R. Kelly comes with the remix to thug it up some more. R. Kelly always comes along with a remix that's edgier than the original, but this one appears to be his most edgiest to date in terms of street content. The continuous spitting of the word "nigga" is not like the R. Kelly we're used to knowing. In fact, this whole thug image is not like R. Kelly at all.
