Five, Deuce, Four, Tre |
Artist: Backbone |
|
I'm really not that familiar with Backbone's material, and wasn't enthusiastically looking foward to this track, but I was pleasantly surprised. The track's on a laid-back Southern vibe, with a catchy hook, and a cool beat. Backbone drop some okay rhymes, they're much better flow wise than lyrically, but as long as there are good elements...A pretty smooth jawn.

Hop |
Artist: X-Con ft. JT Money & Twig of Awetopsy |
|
I saw JT Money's name here, and knew I would not be feeling this. Money D hooks up a simplistic and generic beat for the lyrically "un-fuckwittable" emcees. "I told ya if I shoot ya in ya ass ya hop." Whoa, I'm blown away with this "brilliance." The hook works wonders to propel this track into a new element of wackness. What an "amazing" track.

Fuck Y'all1/ If You Want It2 / True O.G.3 |
Artist: Genovese |
|
As you should all know, the rumour surrounding 'Fuck Y'all' is that it's aimed at Jigga in retaliation to an interpreted diss. I don't know if that's true or not, but it's fairly irrelevant. The beat, credited to H.U.S.H. is alright, but the lyrics and flow of Genovese aren't that great at all. Vese seems "too" laid back, he sounds relatively like Shyne but doesn't come off as well. 'If You Want It' has another okay beat, not that outstanding...the hook works fairly well, though it's been said before, it still comes off nicely. Big Red and Mo' Money guest on the track and perform reasonably well, Vese comes off similarly to how he did on 'Fuck Y'All.' An okay track. Then, lastly we have 'True O.G' which has the best beat on the 12" (handled by J Blend). The lyrics aren't too bad here, and Vese puts in a bit more effort, improving the cut. An okay 12", with the best track being 'True O.G.' nothing that brilliant though.

What Great Means |
Artist: Session |
|
In Session's own words "This is nothing compared to my new shit," well, I haven't heard Session's new shit, but I have heard this. Agallah handles production and flips the sample used in Bad Meets Evil's 'Scary Movies.' One thing Session has a good grasp of is if you don't have that great a hook, don't spend a minute spitting it. The hook here I wasn't feeling, but thankfully, Session doesn't concentrate on it much. The vocals could've been made louder, so listening to his lyrics would be easier. The lyrics are consistently nice, and Session's flow works well here. I'm waiting to hear what his "new shit" will be like. You can DL and check out other tracks of his here.

Everybody Get Up1/ Give It Up 22 |
Artist: Jay Dee Presents Frank N Dank |
|
By now everyone who knows anything about hip hop knows about Jay Dee. The man's what many class as a dope producer, I'm no exception. But, unfortunately this isn't strictly beats. Frank N Dank I'm really not feeling, they're responsible for the lyrics here and they have very little lyrical skill or decent mic prescence. If anything all they add is somewhat of a tacky vibe to the hooks. This remain's consistent on both tracks, though I don't mind the hook on 'Give It Up 2.' The beats are consistently nice on this 12", so you may want to pick it up for that reason.

Behind Gates1/ To Whom This May Concern2 |
Artist: E-40 ft. Ice Cube |
|
E-40 has a unique style which only some people enjoy, at times, I admit, I do. This 12" features tracks from his latest LP. 'Behind Gates' features some nice production by Rick Rock and Ice Cube guest rhymes on the track. It's actually not too bad. 'To Whom This May Concern' has a dramatic beat with Blaqtoven responsible for it. It's the worse of the two cuts, the hook annoys me considerably and the lyrics aren't amazing either.
