Slangston Hughes Bio It's a humid mid-summer night in Milwaukee, Wisconsin; when the neighborhood hardheads decide to gather at the local DJs basement to chill out and have a weed-smoking session instead of going to the b-ball courts at the park to run a half-court game of 3-on-3. Standing behind a wooden table with old, faded-blue milk crates marked "Kemp's Dairy" to each side filled with vinyls of 70s disco, funk, and a newer music called Hip-Hop, the host begins to mix in the unmistakably crisp voice of an MC called KRS-ONE, which sings: "Boogie-Down Productions....Will always get paid....We'll take the wackest song....And make it behhh-....Remember....To let us into ya skin....And then we'll begin....To master....Rhymin', rhymin', rhymin!" After the song breaks in, a 9-year old boy named Jason Kemp bounces around the room attempting to rhyme along with one of the MC's of a group that has had a long-tem effect on his faith in Hip-Hop. This boy, who would eventually become a young man with ambitions to play in the NBA and to become an astronaut, went on to graduate from High School in 1994 with a scholarship and attended Bradley University until 1996 when he transferred to Murray State University in Kentucky to major in newspaper journalism. It was in that semester in between transferring schools that Jason would find a desire to improve on his writing skills, and take poetry more seriously. Along with taking Western Humanities and English courses to open him more to poetry, he started working on a demo, although it was not professionally made, and has evolved his skills to universal storytelling with aim and purpose in every song he writes. However, being solely an MC is not the final agenda for this 22-year old man. Along with keeping sharpness in lyric-writing and rhyming, he eventually wants to own and operate his own record distribution company. If you would like to get in contact with Slangston Hughes concerning a record deal or something of that nature please email jason.kemp@murraystate.edu. |
